True North Connect
Relationship-First Spelling Support
for Nonspeaking Individuals
Spelling to Communicate (S2C) is a method that teaches individuals with motor challenges how to use purposeful movement to spell their thoughts.
Many nonspeakers understand far more than their bodies allow them to express. The barrier is often motor planning and coordination -- not intelligence. S2C works by teaching the specific motor skills needed to point to letters on a letterboard. Over time, this practice strengthens the connection between the brain and body, allowing communication to become more intentional and reliable.
As motor control improves, spellers typically progress from pointing on a board to using more complex boards and eventually typing independently. Communication grows alongside motor stamina -- moving from simple responses to deeper, more abstract expression.
S2C is considered a form of augmentative and alternative communication (AAC). It does not replace speech therapy or other supports. Instead, it offers another pathway for individuals whose speech is unreliable.
At True North Connect, sessions are led by an International Association for Spelling as Communication (I-ASC) Certified S2C Practitioner who has completed rigorous training in best practices. We approach this work with respect , a strong belief in competence, and the understanding that communication grows through relationship. We have watched this method unlock voices we always knew were there.
